MERCHANT MARINE VETERANS
MARSHFIELD BEING A TOWN OF SHIP BUILDING OF
YEARS PASSED ALL ALONG OUR SEA COAST AND RIVERS, I THOUGHT IT SHOULD BE MENTIONED OF THE
MEN AND WOMEN MERCHANT MARINE SAILORS. THOUGH TO MY KNOWLEDGE NO MARSHFIELD MERCHANT
MARINE HAS EVER BEEN LOST AT SEA DURING WAR TIME FROM THE TOWN, JANUARY 19, 1988 THE
SURVIVING MERCHANT MARINES WERE GRANTED THE LONG OVERDUE STATUS AS VETERANS BY THE
GOVERNMENT.
THE UNITED STATES LOST 866 MERCHANT VESSELS, AND 6,795 MERCHANT MARINES WERE KILLED AT SEA
IN ACTION WITH THE ENEMY IN WORLD WAR II.. THEIR GRAVES ARE THE DEEP OCEAN FLOOR, NO
HEADSTONE, NO FLOWERS, AND NO PLACE FOR THEIR LOVED ONES TO MOURN. LEST WE FORGET THE
MERCHANT MARINE THAT SLEEP AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA THAT SERVED THEIR COUNTRY MERCHANT
MARINES HAS TO DO WITH OCEAN COMMERCE AND IS VERY IMPORTANT TO A COUNTRY, ALL SHIPS,
WHETHER OWNED BY THE GOVERNMENT, OR PRIVATELY WHICH CARRY ON THAT COMMERCE ARE IT'S
MERCHANT MARINE.
THE SUPREMACY OF TRADE ON THE HIGH SEAS IS VERY IMPORTANT IN DETERMINING A COUNTRY'S
WEALTH AND POWER; CONSEQUENTLY, EACH NATION SEEKS TO ENCOURAGE THE BUILDING OF SHIPS AND
TRADE WITH OTHER COUNTRIES.
ALTHOUGH FOR MANY YEARS THE UNITED STATES HAS NOT HAD A LARGE MERCHANT MARINE OF IT OWN.
IT HAS MAINTAINED FAIR SHARES OF WORLD TRADE BY HAVING SHIPS OF OTHER NATIONS CARRY Its
PRODUCTS.
THE WEAKNESS OF SUCH A POLICY WAS SHOWN DURING WORLD WAR I, WHEN FOREIGN SHIPS WERE NOT
AVAILABLE FOR CARRYING AMERICAN GOODS AND THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAD TO RESORT TO A HASTY
BUILDING PROGRAM FOR PASSENGER AND FREIGHT TRANSPORT VESSELS.
BEFORE THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR AND DURING THE WARS IN EUROPE, THE AMERICAN MERCHANT FLEET
LED IN SEA GOING COMMERCE, PRIMARILY BECAUSE THE SHIPS OF OTHER POWERS WERE ENGAGED IN
WARFARE.
FOLLOWING THE WARS IN EUROPE GREAT BRITAIN SET OUT TO REGAIN HER FORMER COMMERCIAL
PRESTIGE. THE DECLINE OF AMERICAN MERCHANT MARINE WAS COMPLETED WITH THE CIVIL WAR, WHEN
MOST OF THE MERCHANT SHIPS WERE EITHER SUNK BY GUNBOATS ATTACKS OR WERE SOLD ABOARD. FROM
THAT TIME UNTIL WORLD WAR I, GREAT BRITAIN AND GERMANY HELD UNDISPUTED SWAY OVER OCEAN
GOING TRADE.
WHEN AMERICAN COMMERCE APPEARED SO SEVERELY CRIPPLED FOLLOWING THE ENTRY OF THE UNITED
STATES INTO THE FIRST WORLD WAR, CONGRESS CREATED THE UNITED STATES SHIPPING BOARD, WHICH
IN TURN SET UP THE MERCHANT FLEET CORPORATION.
GREAT SHIPYARDS WERE ERECTED AND LARGE SHIPS WERE HURRIEDLY CONSTRUCTED, SO THAT THE
SHIPPING CAPACITY OF THE AMERICAN FLEET WAS INCREASED TENFOLD.
FOLLOWING THE ARMISTICE, THE BOARD SOLD ITS SHIPS TO PRIVATE COMPANIES, WHICH AGREED TO
CONTINUE OPERATION OF TRADE ROUTES ESTABLISHED BY THE BOARD. IN 1936, THE UNITED STATES
MARITIME COMMISSION WAS ESTABLISHED.
ONE OF THE OUTCOMES OF AMERICA'S INTENSIFIED SHIPBUILDING PROGRAM IN WORLD WAR II WAS THE
USE OF MASS PRODUCTION METHODS ADOPTED FROM THE AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY TO TURN OUT, AT
TREMENDOUS SPEED, GREAT NUMBERS OF NEW STYLE CARGO VESSELS CALLED LIBERTY SHIPS.
IN 1942 THE WAR SHIPPING ADMINISTRATION, WHICH SHOULD HAVE CONTROL ESTABLISHED THE
OPERATION, REPAIR AND MANNING OF THE AMERICAN MERCHANT MARINE AND PERFORM MANY OF THE
FUNCTIONS OF THE UNITED STATES MARITIME NEW AGENCY.
THESE SHIPS HAD NO GUNS. THEY CROSSED THE SEA DURING WAR TIME WITH THE NAVY SHIPS AS
ESCORTS AS THESE SHIPS TRANSPORT SUPPLIES AND SERVICE MEN OVER SEAS TO THE WAR ZONES.
AS A TOWN BORDERING THE OCEAN AND THE MANY SHIP BUILDING YARDS OF THE TOWNS RIVERS IT IS
TIME THAT THE TOWN RECOGNIZES Its BRAVE MEN OF THE SEA AND THE MERCHANT MARINE.
I WOULD LIKE TO THANK WALTER FOSTER FOR HIS HELP ON THE MERCHANT MARINE VETERANS
INFORMATION.
I REMEMBER ONE MERCHANT MARINER WHILE GROWING UP IN MARSHFIELD ON SOUTH RIVER STREET BY
THE NAME OF BOB BELL, HE WAS A SINGLE MAN WHEN I KNEW HIM. I DON'T KNOW IF HE EVER MARRIED
OR NOT.
HIS HOUSE WAS THE ONE ALONG THE SIDE OF THE ROAD THAT SITS AT THE EDGE OF THE MARSH JUST
AFTER SID EWELLS HOUSE AND BEFORE MA AND PA HAYES FARM. HE WAS GONE FOR LONG PERIODS OF
TIME. I USED TO WALK FROM KENT PARK TO THE CENTER OF TOWN BACK IN THOSE DAYS OF THE MID
FIFTIES.
WHILE WALKING BY HE ASKED IF YOU LIKE TO EARN SOME MONEY CUTTING HIS GRASS, OF COURCE I
SAID YES AND HE PAID ME $ 5.00. BACK THEN THAT WAS A LOT OF MONEY FOR ABOUT A HALF HOUR OF
WORK THE YARD TODAY IS TWICE THE SIZE AS IT WAS BACK THEN.
HE ASKED ME TO TAKE CARE OF THE LAWN FOR HIM WHEN HE WAS AT SEA IF IT NEEDED CUTTING AND
HE WOULD PAY ME WHEN HE CAME HOME WHICH I DID FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS.
